Are Nile River Cruises Safe?
How to read Egypt’s advisory, and what to plan for on the Luxor–Aswan route.

What the Advisory Says — and Where
Start with the State Department’s advisory for Egypt in the State Department travel advisories. It sets a level for the country as a whole and names specific areas where it advises against all travel. When we checked in October 2026, those Do Not Travel areas were the North and Middle Sinai and parts of the Western Desert along the Libyan border — regions far from the Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan, where cruise ships sail. Read the current version yourself before you book and again before you travel, because the wording and the level can change.
Egypt treats tourism as a national priority, and visitors see a visible security presence at major sites, hotels and docks. Lines and tour operators plan transfers and excursions with that in mind. Following your guide’s instructions, staying with your group at busy sites and keeping to the planned program are the simplest ways to travel smoothly.

Health on the Nile
- Heat. Upper Egypt is very hot in summer; tours start early to avoid the midday sun. Drink plenty of water and wear a hat.
- Water and food. Drink bottled water; take care with raw food and ice ashore.
- Vaccines and medicines. Check the CDC Travelers’ Health page for Egypt well before you go.
- Walking. Temples and tombs involve uneven ground, steps and sand.
- Medical care. Luxor, Aswan and Cairo have hospitals; insurance with medical evacuation is wise.

Nile Safety Questions
Are Nile river cruises safe?
Many thousands of travelers sail between Luxor and Aswan each year with established lines and local operators. Egypt has its own security picture, so read the State Department advisory before booking; the areas it singles out for Do Not Travel — the North and Middle Sinai and parts of the Western Desert near the Libyan border — are far from the Nile Valley route. Book with an established operator and follow its guidance ashore.
When is the best time for a Nile cruise?
The cooler months, roughly October to April, are the most comfortable. Summer in Upper Egypt is extremely hot, which is a real health consideration for older travelers and anyone with heart or breathing conditions.
Can I drink the water on a Nile cruise?
Drink bottled or treated water, which cruise ships provide. Follow the CDC’s food and water advice for Egypt, and be careful with salads and ice ashore.
